Hardware requirements
- Disk Space: 30 MB
- Memory: 256MB recommended
- CPU: Pentium III or faster
- Scanner: 300DPI resolution (recommended) or more
- Printer: Inkjet or Laser (recommended for
speeding up the printing process)
Software requirements
- Operating System: Windows NT / 2000 / XP
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
Installing TransBraille
- TransBraille installation package contains all the software that is required by the
TransBraille system other than Operating System. All software is bundled into a
single installation file. Double Click on the “Setup.exe” file to install
TransBraille on your system.
- The default installation path is “C:\Program Files\TransBraille\”
- The installation creates a desktop icon. You can start using TransBraille by double
clicking on the desktop icon.
Scanning the Braille Page
- Scan the back side of the Braille page to avoid ink marks, if any, on the front side of the Braille page. Scanning should be done at 300DPI resolution. (A sample image with staple marks and ink marks is shown
here)
- Save the scanned Braille page on your computer in JPEG Format
Editing the Braille Page using MS Paint
- Open MS Paint.
- Open the JPEG image that you saved in previous step.
- Flip the image horizontally.
- Erase staple marks, ink marks on the image, if any.
- Select any area on the image that does not contain blobs and copy it.
- Paste the copied area on the erased area.
- Save the image.
- A sample image without ink marks or staple marks is shown here.
Loading the Braille Page
- Open TransBraille. You will see a blank window as shown
below in figure 1.

- Click on File > Open. You will see a dialog box as shown
below in figure 2.

- Select “BrailleImage Files (*.jpg)” from the “Files of type”
drop down box.
- Select the JPEG file you saved previously.
- Click Open.
- The Braille loads into the window. The window will appear as
shown in figure 3 below.

Converting into ASCII
- Click on Image > Convert to ASCII
- A warning message will be displayed. Click OK.
- If the system is uncertain about a certain line, it asks you
if the blob on a particular line belongs to left column or right column.
- Verify the same with the original Braille page and select
either ‘LEFT_COLUMN” or “RIGHT_COLUMN”
- Press OK.
- The dialog box is shown in figure 4 below.

- After the image has been converted to ASCII, you will see a
dialog box asking you if want to view the Nemeth File.
Select “Yes” if you wish to view the Nemeth File. Select "No" if you do not
wish to view the Nemeth File.
Identifying Math
The window with Nemeth File will look
like as shown in figure 5 below.

- Select “Nemeth Translation > Identify Math” from the Menu.
- Select ‘Nemeth Translation > Show MathTag” from the Menu.
- The MathTag resembles a HTML Tag. A math expression is enclosed between
<MATH> and </MATH>
- Double click the left mouse button to insert <MATH> and
double click the right mouse button to insert </MATH>
- Inserting ;; is equivalent to <MATH> and ;' is equivalent to </MATH>
- After you have made the desired changes to the Nemeth File,
click on the “save” icon on the toolbar to save the file.
- If you want to make any changes to the nemeth file generated and you do not know what the Nemeth expression evaluates to, you can check the nemeth expression before making final changes to the Nemeth document. Please see Appendix “Evaluating Nemeth Expression”.
Converting to LaTeX
- Click on the “Nemeth Translation >
Convert to Latex” from the Menu.
- Once the conversion is completed, a dialog box will popup
asking if you would like to view the Latex file.
- Click “Yes” to view the latex file or “NO” if you do not
wish to view the Latex file.
- After your selection, the latex document will be converted to
a PDF document and is saved in the same folder as your Braille Image.
- Click ‘Yes” in the dialog box that appears to view the PDF
output.
- If you want to make any changes to the Latex file displayed to you,
please refer to the “Evaluating Literary Braille Expression” in the Appendix.

Evaluating Nemeth Expression
- Click on the Evaluation > Evaluate Nemeth from
the Menu.
- You will see a dialog box like the one shown
below.

- Enter a Nemeth expression you want to check against the “Enter a Nemeth math Expression”
- Click the “Translate” button on the top right corner.
- You will see an equivalent Latex expression.
- Any error messages in your nemeth math expression are displayed in the “Error Message” box.
Evaluating Literary Braille Expression
- Suppose after looking at the Latex file, if you find a need to change the Latex file and you do not know what a Literary Braille expression evaluates to in Latex, select the Evaluate > Evaluate Braille from the Menu.
- You will see a dialog box like the one shown
below.

- In the “Enter Literary Braille Text” box, enter the Literary Braille expression you want to convert to Latex.
- Click the “Translate” button on the top right corner.
- You will see the evaluated Literary Braille expression in Latex in the “Latex Expression box”.
- Any errors in the input Literary Braille expression will be displayed in the “Error Message” box.
